OCTOBER MONSTER SKETCH A DAY #8

To commemorate my favorite month (October) and my favorite holiday (Halloween), I'm doing a monster sketch per day.

I've never been crazy about the Devil in the context of pop culture. Overall, I find his usage in print and film fiction to be overdone, and ultimately, a lazy choice in lieu of creating an original monster. That said, the biggest exception to this gripe is the character of B. L. Zebubb in the 1978 animated Halloween special, "The Devil and Daniel Mouse", produced by the Nelvana animation studio. In it, B.L. is a sleazy and scary music producer who convinces Jan Mouse to sell her soul for a successful singing career, only to have his scheme thwarted by Jan and her boyfriend Dan. The cartoon is a shining childhood memory for me, and B.L.'s reptilian appearance has inspired a lot of monsters that I've created over the years.

To commemorate my favorite month (October) and my favorite holiday (Halloween), I'm doing a monster sketch per day.

I went with a fresh take on the 'Bride of Frankenstein' by making her a little girl. In this case, Frankenstein is her teddy bear, and at some point she pretends to marry him. I liked the idea of sticking electrodes throughout her nimbus cloud hairdo, as if that's how she's brought to life. And I thought making her lollipop into one of those electricity balls was a pretty funny gag.

This is Jack-In-Irons, a giant from British folklore who haunts lonely roads in Yorkshire, wears chains as well as wears the heads of his victims as part of his decor.

OCTOBER MONSTER SKETCH A DAY #5

To commemorate my favorite month (October) and my favorite holiday (Halloween), I'm doing a monster sketch per day.

I chose to draw the gran'daddy of all Kaiju--Godzilla--punching another monster in the face. When I draw Godzilla, I prefer to draw his face a little more feline, the way he looked in his earliest appearances in the 50's and 60's. I also like to break tradition completely, and draw Godzilla hunched over to better emphasize his awesome spinal plates.

To commemorate my favorite month (October) and my favorite holiday (Halloween), I'm doing a monster sketch per day.

This is my take on the classic sci fi/horror character, The Fly. I think both the 1958 original and the 1986 remake are creepy and cool in their own ways, but I tend to lean towards the 80's David Cronenberg-directed version as my favorite. That said, I wanted my take on the character to skew a bit sillier, so I did a loose interpretation of the 50's version. I even drew this a bit more stylized, with wonky proportions and angular shapes, reflective of cartoons from the 1950's.
