SHOW AND TELL

Y'see, because I'm here to TELL you about this week's SHOW. Get it? Hey, if this were kindergarten, I'd look pretty damn clever right now. Ahem. Anyway, my Live Sketch Show goes live again tomorrow night at 8 pm eastern time, and I hope to see as many of you guys there as can manage. I appreciate any viewers I can get, and like they say, the more the merrier (no clue who "they" are, or why they're using an antiquated word like "merrier", but what the hell--they've got a good point). This week's theme is comic strip characters, so brush up on your comic strip knowledge and catch me as always at this link. CONVENTION APPEARANCE:
I'm appearing at my first "Hoosier" con (which would be a far cooler name for it) this weekend at the Summit City Comic Con in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It sounds like a very cool, artist-centric show, and lots of my pals from the cartooning game are gonna rock the con floor with me, such as Tony Miello, Denver Brubaker, Brett Pinson, Jay Jacot, Katie Cook, Kyle Latino, and a whole slew of other talented folks! If you're from Indiana or can make the trip, come on out and see me! I'll have books to sell, prints to push, and will be taking as many commissions as I can fit it the day! WORKSHOP:
On June 21st, I'm conducting a workshop on how to create comics. It will be held at the River Rapids District Library in Chesaning, Michigan from 1-3 pm. Any teen from the area who'd like to attend should follow this link and see about registering soon!

STUFF I'VE DRAWN:

I don't think I spend enough time here telling and showing folks what I've most recently drawn. It's time to remedy that...

This was a recent commission for me to design some desktop wallpaper for a fan of Batman comics.

I just completed work on some sketch cards for Rittenhouse's "Marvel: Dangerous Divas" set, and this was a commission based off that work. Featured here are Marvel characters Ms. Marvel, Phoenix and Squirrel Girl (a character so weird, you'd think I made her up myself).

For you Dead Duck fans (and if you're reading this blog, you'd BETTER be Dead Duck fans), this was a commission where I was asked to have Dead Duck picking up the soul of Grigori Rasputin. I still think Gonads is one of the funniest words ever spoken.

This is artwork I was commissioned to create for a woman's blog about traveling tips.

Part of a stack of commissions (some of which I'm currently working on) for a client who wanted my rendition of Leatherface from the horror movie "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

And lastly, a piece I originally created for a Muppet-themed t-shirt contest. I've since decided against entering, but I still like this cartoon, and will probably makes prints of it at some point.

GUEST ARTIST
My pal and fellow Ann Arbor cartoonist, Denver "The Omelet" Brubaker (he doesn't know that's his nickname, but he will when he reads this) allowed me to contribute art to his awesome web comic, TALES OF A CHECKERED MAN. Denver and I met for coffee a couple weeks ago, and I got the itch to draw his characters (once you see his incredible line work, you'll have the itch, too). So he asked me to draw his character Squid Girl, which was all kinds of fun cheesecakery to create! He liked it enough to include it as poster art within the comic.You can view his website by clicking on the link above. And you can view the full Squid Girl art that I created below:

COMMISSIONS
I've had plenty of commissions over the past few months, and I just had a really fun one come from the land down under! Mary Tyler, who owns The Alice Way--a goth clothing and apparel store in Australia--asked me to design her store's logo. From a design perspective, I've always loved the goth look (I regrettably couldn't pull it off myself--I'm too boxy), so it was a blast to create this logo. I also learned that Mary is a fan of Dead Duck and Zombie Chick, so it was an added thrill to meet a fan from one of my favorite countries (don't look at me that way, Canada. So I said I'd wait to let people know if there would be a show this week, depending on how busy I was. Well, I'm busy. REAL busy. So the show's on hiatus this week. I'd like to keep an "every other week" schedule, but we'll see how well I get caught up on things.

RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE:
I've had regular e-mail correspondences with art director Gary Pullin, and we're moving forward with Necronomicomics! It looks like the first regular installment of my comic will appear in the August 1st issue. I've got three comics in the hopper, and five more that I've just written and am anxious to start drawing. With my love of horror films, I've no shortage of inspiration, and I look forward to sinking my teeth into this project like a zombie into some poor sap's chest cavity!

WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO:
I received word yesterday that I've been invited as a guest at Wizard World Chicago! That means a free table, which is a big deal to me! It also means that the convention community is starting to view me as a professional, someone worth having at their shows. For me, it's an honor, and I look forward to seeing all my Chicago fans (and visiting fans from outlying regions, too) in August!  In the meantime, check out my entry on their website here!

WEBSITE NEWS:
I'm not sure how much I've mentioned this, but my website is undergoing a HUGE overhaul. It's not apparent if you view the site right now--the old version still exists as we create something new to replace it--but when you see what my pal and comic book artist/letterer/web designer Nate Pride has concocted, I think you'll be as impressed as I am! No official date of unveiling as of yet, but expect to see cool stuff when the time comes!

So other than that, I'm swamped with commissions, comic book assignment, sketch card assignments, impending caricaturing gigs, and even a comic book workshop I'm conducting next month! Whew! So I'll see you when I see you, and report any new events as they come (and as i can find time to report 'em)!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

I had a great time at Wonderworld Comics in Taylor, MI last Saturday, where I drew sketches and sold comics all day. Thanks to Dennis for allowing me to be part of WW's Free Comic Book Day event! The highlight of the day for me was being interviewed by Rob Allstetter and Jordan Trovillion for Rob's "Comics Continuum" TV show--a program all about comics and comic related news. Rob tells me the episode I'll appear on will air on Saturday, May 14th on TV20 in Detroit. Catch it if you can!

PODCAST INTERVIEW

I was recently interviewed by Chuck Moore, creator of the comic news website, "Comic Related", and host of the site's podcast show, "The Related Recap". Chuck talked to me about all the different projects I'm currently working on, as well as my background in cartooning. It was a very fun and thorough interview, and it was great reconnecting with Chuck, who first interviewed me back in 2009 when Dead Duck was first released. NECRONOMICOMICS

Issue #111 of Rue Morgue Magazine has finally hit the stands, and my cartoon has appeared in it! I've spoken with the editors, and thanks in no small part to your e-mails, they're talking about running Necronomicomics as a regular monthly feature! But we shouldn't cease the e-mails yet! For a better understanding of what I'm trying to accomplish, here's a recap:

I'm starting an online campaign to get my new horror comic strip, "Necronomicomics", into Rue Morgue as a regular feature, and I need YOU to send some e-mails! Contact your local bookstore (most big chain stores carry it)  and ask for issue #111 of Rue Morgue Magazine. Buy the crap out of it, then send the most glowing, persuasive, begging e-mail you can to the editor and the art director, telling them how much you dig "Necronomicomics", and how you want to see it as a regular feature! Sound like something you'd be interested in? I know I am! Here are the addresses you need to write to:

SKETCH CARDS

I've worked on several sketch card sets over the past few years, and my most recent work is proving to be the most fun!

I've started my second set for Rittenhouse--Marvel Universe 2011! It allows me to draw most any Marvel character I want, and so far, this has been a dream come true! The thirteen year old kid in me who bought stacks of comics every weekend is just geeking out to no end!

I'm also working on the Galaxgals Eradication series for 5finity. That series gives me tons of creative freedom to design space girls battling aliens and robots, so it's certainly up my creative alley!

Are you still with me...?

Okay. So last Wednesday's Live Sketch Show did not go smoothly. The problem was, I broadcasted from my new computer for the first time, and the Ustream website didn't jive with my new PC at all. I was somehow prevented from activating "broadcast", and after finally figuring out the problem fifteen minutes into the show, I still couldn't get the sound to work, which took another five to ten minutes to figure out. While I monkeyed with the website, I noticed a lot of folks on the chat window were wondering why I was absent for that first half hour. By the time I got things all worked out, a lot of those people had long since left and never came back. Needless to say, I was in a crap mood after that and my whole game was thrown off.

This week's show will be better.
